Kenyan Court Declines to Cancel Nairobi CBD Matatu Ban

Residents of the Kenyan Capital Nairobi who rely on commuter mini buses to get to work in the city's central district were literally forced to walk to work on Monday. That because a law banning the Matatus as they are known, came into force on Monday, the idea is believed to reduce congestion  but there have been much debates the effect this would have on the commuters and the matatus as well.

Thousands of commuters for years used to take a ride into the city center now forced to walk for kilometers to get there, others resulted to very risky ways of shortening their walk. In Central Nairobi, the governor's plan to decongest the city clearly showed. Previously, busy bus stops were largely deserted and the roads moved much faster, taxi drivers has said to have made a large amounts from those who could afford the extra cost to be driven into the city center.

The Government insists that the move is for the good of the city but trust of operators and even Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja have moved to court saying the new order would halt commuters and the economy. Many agree that Nairobi traffic needs to be managed but how this needs to be done best is an equation that is yet to be solved.
